Informative Netflix True Stories

By

I have curated a list of Netflix documentaries that explore true stories and provide to be informative and educational, as well as being a good watch!

First, is the story of Cyntoia Brown. Cyntoia was sex-trafficked and forced into prostitution in the USA. When she was 16, she killed a man in self defence, who was paying to sleep with her; and as a young girl, she was tried in court as a woman. This documentary follows Cyntoia’s story. It shines a light on the American legal, justice and sentencing system.
Self Made: Inspired by the life of Madam C.J. Walker. Madam C.J. was America’s first black female millionaire and built an empire by selling hair products mainly to black women in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Her story is worth knowing and this movie is worth watching!
The Great Hack. This documentary explores how Cambridge Analytica influenced the U.K. Brexit referendum and the 2016 U.S. Presidential election. This is an absolute must watch for anybody who believes in the truth and wants to know what really happened in our elections. Two of the people who once worked for Cambridge Analytica and appear in this documentary have released books detailing their experiences: Mindf*ck by Christopher Wylie, and Targeted by Brittany Kaiser. You can read short summaries of them on my Book Club page.
When They See Us is about five New York boys who were wrongly convicted, and sent to prison as teenagers for the killing of a woman in Central Park. It’s heartbreaking and a hard watch, but a must watch – the system failed these boys. The movie shows institutionalised racism and police corruption in America.
This movie is one of my favourite truth-exposing stories. A true story, based on the American newspaper, The Boston Globe, and their team of investigative journalists that exposed child abuse and cover-ups within the Catholic Church.
Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal is a must watch. It sheds light on the bribes and side door deals that allowed America’s elite to gain their children access to top universities.
Britney vs Spears. It shines a light on the lengths of control Britney’s so called team went to, in order to uphold the Conservatorship. One of the things that stood out to me, amongst many, was that it paints a haunting picture of the unfortunate sneaking around Britney had to endure in order to try and obtain legal counsel – multiple times.
Athlete A follows reporters from The Indianapolis Star that expose sexual abuse inside USA gymnastics at the hands of the Team Doctor, Larry Nassar.
Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness follows JVN meeting experts in their fields to discuss and understand a wide range of topics, such as bugs, skyscrapers and snacking.
Dirty Money. Each episode shows you how just how much cash and capitalism runs the world. It covers scandals of corruption in business, corporate fraud and greed from perspectives of the perpetrators and the victims.
Explained puts the spotlight on different important issues each episode that you don’t necessarily hear in the mainstream daily news. Each episode generally range up to 20 minutes, I find it’s good to have on in the background.
Down to Earth with Zac Efron travels the world and casts light on healthy, sustainable ways of living such as clean drinking water, renewable energy in Iceland and Wildlife refuges in Costa Rica.
Seaspiracy is a documentary highlighting the harmful environmental impacts of fishing, and various human impacts on marine life
Rotten is an investigative documentary series that focuses on corruption in the global food supply food chain. Each episode shines light on different issues: The bottled water industry, the process of refined sugar, and the global fishing industry. Expect some uncomfortable truths!
Next, is Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich. The documentary contains stories from survivors and exposes a sexual pyramid scheme of groomed and abused girls, in most/all cases, minors.
How To Fix a Drug Scandal centres around the true story of two American chemists that tampered with evidence and the aftereffects in the criminal justice system.
Exhibit A is another true crime series, that focuses on how people have been criminally convicted through potentially manipulated, or misinterpreted evidence.
Each episode of the true crime series Trial By Media follows a different case, and how the media may have impacted said verdicts.
This documentary follows republican advisor, Roger Stone, in 2017. The revelations are pretty vile to be honest. As we know, in November 2019, he was convicted in a federal court on one count of obstruction, five counts of false statements, one count of witness tampering, including obstructing the congressional investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. It’s a very interesting watch, to say the least. The more you know, and all that.
Journalist Jeff Sharlet recalls his experience of living with The Family – conservative lead Christians that wields power and influence in Washington DC.
